Visit Kinari Bazaar once and you feel like getting married JUST for the sake of it. Feel like having a mega bollywood-esque wedding (even if you are completely against extravagant wasteful weddings)just so you could create all these clothes for yourself :)
Once you see these little shops in the tiny lanes with their enormous collection of borders and embellishments, you will never want to buy something from a botique or designer, you`d want to design something yourself.

This is exactly what happened to me. I went looking for a simple border for a bright coral chiffon sari I had. No lavish wedding to go to, I was just hoping to wear it on Diwali. Even though I got a border I really LOVE, I came back feeling a little disappointed. Cos each shop I went to, a thousand ideas came to my head and I wanted to buy so many things. But where would I WEAR these things I was designing in my HEAD!?
I was pestering my mother so much, continuously telling her how our small family never has any grand wedding which one can plan and make outfits for. I pestered her so much apparently that she actually said I should get married. If you knew my mother you`d know how bizarre it is for her to say this.
ANYWAY.. there is no way I can actually describe the beautiful things I came across so I shall let this post turn into a Photo Diary of sorts :)
Trying out different borders on the Sari.
I fell in LOVE with these! Need to make something with this ASAP. If only an occasion would present itself :(
My mother bought herself a cutwork parsi border.
It was for Rs 4500.
Thinking of using it over a cream chiffon maybe.
The other colours it was available in
Yep. JUST borders.
This is what I finally picked. From the first shop I visited :) (you can spot it in the first picture)
It was for Rs 2100 and my mother painstakingly sewed it on.
AndI didnt even end up wearing it on diwali. Opppss!
I have a really nice turquoise blouse to go with this.
Cutest thing EVER invented! I picked up two and they drive the dogs at home crazy!
Let me know if you like this style of post? Few words, LOTS of pictures? If yes then I went to Sarojini on Saturday, might do one on that.
Thats EXACTLY how you will feel while shopping in the tiny lanes of kinari bazaar.. but you must PERSEVERE for the love of all things pretty!

I am currently on a "make your own wedding lehenga" mission. And I was looking for something like this only. I am new in Delhi and had only seen one dinghy shop in Lajpat market which sold very small collection of laces. My frnd asked me to check out Kinari Bazar and you showed up with such wonderful pictures on my google search! Good job!
ReplyDeleteHey
Deletemail me info@phdinfashion.com and i`ll guide you :)
can you please tell me of a place like this in bangalore????
ReplyDeleteplease help...i have my best buddies wedding 'round the corner would love to find a place like this in Bangalore.
ReplyDelete@ Anon - I really dont know about banglore, but i highly doubt it. If it were there one woudlve heard about it.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post! I am definitely going there for my wedding shopping! Thanks for such a picture-ful post... new follower :)
ReplyDeleteTo someone who asked about Bangalore, you will get them at Commerical street - there's a bylane called Narayan Pillai street... go through those shops they have loads but not such supreme quantity and quality.
ReplyDeleteApart from that, Raja market has awesome wholesale stuff...
However,, never compare prices with what we get in Delhi or even Mumbai.
Hope this helped.
hey! thid is awsome. i m scheduled to go for a visit 2 delhi dis month. can u give me the directions to dis place starting from CP?
ReplyDelete@ anon please take the metro to chandni chowk. U can mail me as well if u`d like more info stylish.rammblings@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteHi! My names Aman. I am coming down to India next month and had a few questions.
ReplyDeleteI am trying to locate the best place to purchase Indian bridal/non bridal outfits at wholesale prices. What would be the best places? I have many designs of my own that I wish to get made also. Where would I be able to find a tailor n kaarigar that would offer me wholesale prices as everything I will be purchasing will be in bulk.
Any suggestions are EXTREMELY appreciated!!
This post of yours was very helpful as well!
And lastly, its only going to be my husband & I coming down. As we don't know anyone in Delhi I was hoping I could get some insight on where to go to have fun, best places to eat, etc. We're both in our mid-20s and we're coming down from Vancouver to celebrate our 1 year wedding anniversary (and get some insight on indian clothing) so any recommendations would be great!!
Thanks so much in advance :)
Aman
