Sonia Gandhi`s Neon Sari

Neon Sonia

While the whole nation and specially the news channels are going crazy over the presidential race, I couldn`t help but notice the sari Sonia Gandhi wore, the day she announced Pranab Mukherjee as the candidate.

It was a simple sari. Nothing really. Just a crisp cotton sari. What Mrs Gandhi usually wears.

What caught my attention was that it was Neon. And not just that, she had colour blocked it with a neon pink blouse!

Surprisingly I couldn`t find any good quality pictures of this, and had to take video grabs.
Apologies for the bad pictures.

Sonia Gandhi has always been impeccably dressed in  Paithani sarees, Cotton, khadi and handloom silks with various weaves. She may not be Indian, but indian women sure can learn a thing or two about 'indian fashion' and textiles from this woman.

Indian fashion is NOT about synthetic embellished sarees, its about the textiles and weaves and handloom. That`s where it originated from. Even though we have moved towards the bling, I don`t think enough appreciation is given to Indian textiles, atleast in the mass markets.

Even though, one could probably talk about each and every saree she wears, I particularly liked this one for its brightness, and the fact that 'neon' is so in these days. I am quite sure she doesnt really care about the trends, but I thought it was cute.

Also it was so refreshing to the eyes, after the craziness of the president nominations!
I couldnt give a crap about the announcement but I was just happy to see her in this :)

While researching this post, I realized that no one had actually written a post about her sarees. Which I found really odd - and sad, considering she must have an enviable collection.
Maybe I couldn`t find anything. But there were very few pictures as well.

On her wedding, Sonia wore a Sari which was made from the cotton Nehru spun while he was in prison. Which Indira Gandhi had also worn on her wedding day.

Initially she had admitted that she felt weird in sarees - a mini skirt of hers (she`s italian,do keep that in mind!!) caused quite a stir here in india. Indira Gandhi is the one who gave her this make over, and now she`s quite the queen of indian textile.

I don`t know what to say about her politics, her history or where she`s from. But if you think of someone who REALLY defines Indian textiles, takes them seriously and promotes them - for me it would be her.

Thoughts?

  1. sonia gandi on a fashion blog. who would have thought..lol..i especially like the third pic, just how impeccably she's draped the saree..which is hard, mind you..most of our actresses with stylist can't get that right!! :)
and i so agree with you on indian handlooms, what with the craziness of bling and net, we often overlook the sophistication of cotton/maheswari/kanjeevaram sarees.. :P

  3. Now that's what I call out of the box! The fact that no one has written about it (sad) makes it that much interesting that YOU wrote about (kudos).

And you are write, she has not got her sartorial dues. She really dress impeccably and wears Indian textiles like they should be.

    Great Post, lady! I like.

  5. Wow, I loved this post that you did. Plus, I have learnt something new too about how Indira Gandhi wore that saree on her wedding day and passed it on to Sonia Gandhi. Plus, her daughter Priyanka Gandhi also is a very well dressed woman.

  6. Nice post, Sonia Gandhi inherited Indira Gandhi's entire saree wardrobe which itself was quite a collection, steeped in tradition, culture and a whole lot of history. Definitely love her well turned out looks, she appears impeccable in each one of them

  11. Absolutely agree, she's truly remarkable. The way she has embraced the Indian culture (atleast in her sartorial choices) is exemplary. Most of the Indian women prefer their western choices. But Sonia promotes the Indian textiles across the world.

  12. What an amazing observation. After I read your post I did some googling on Mrs. Gandhi and her sari's and was also very surprised at how little came up. Completely agree with you that true Indian style is more about the simplicity and craftsmanship than bling. And the neon sari was surprisingly on trend!

  13. I completely agree with you! I love Indian textiles and handloom. They look so good and classy.

It's great how you've covered Sonia Gandhi, when not many fashion bloggers would look to her :)

  14. Indian designers are the one in million. The antique Designer Sarees is what makes them royal. The fashion saris are the reason for their hold elegance.

  15. So many people questioned Sonia Gandhi's Indianness and her eligibility to Prime Ministership long ago. The very fact that she wears Sari, having born and brought up in Italy, proves she is very much embraced Indianness and a true Indian.
